Fields of interest:

We are interested in identifying and characterising specific protein-lipid interactions within membranes. To study such interactions we employ complementary approaches including cellular, in vitro and in silico systems. With a combination of chemical biology and mass-spectrometry based lipidomics we have recently discovered a specific interaction of a type I membrane protein with N-stearoyl-sphingomyelin. Here, lipid-binding modulates protein activity by facilitating protein dimerisation. Using a bioinformatics approach we defined a novel sphingolipid-binding motif within the transmembrane domain of a number of mammalian membrane proteins. We now aim at understanding structure-function-relationships of selected candidate proteins.
