Project description:

Dissection of molecular networks leading to heart disease
Background: Cardiomyopathies and heart failure are a major burden on public health in industrialized countries, because they are associated with a markedly reduced life expectancy and quality of life. Molecular studies revealed several gene networks, non-coding RNAs and proteins to be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of the disease. However, many mechanisms are still unknown, hindering a more individualized and effective care.

Aim of the Ph.D. thesis: Identification of new disease mechanisms leading to more efficient treatment of cardiomyopathies and heart failure.

We are offering an attractive position for a pre-doctoral Ph.D. student at the University of Heidelberg, Lab for Molecular Genetics and Translational Biotechnology.
Methods that will be used:
Our lab has a rich portfolio of established methods. Our state-of-the-art next-generation sequencing machines allow short- and long-read sequencing of transcriptomes, genomes and epigenomes. All suitable molecular methods like immunohistochemistry, 2D page and genetic manipulations through CRISPR/Cas9 are established in our lab. For in-vivo studies we rely on our zebrafish facility, studies in-vitro include patient-specific iPS cells with several genetic backgrounds. The Ph.D. student will be trained in all required techniques for the project. A team of scientists, bioinformaticians, physicians scientists, and technicians will jointly work with you on your innovative project.
Cooperation partners:
We are tightly connected to internationally leading groups in the field. We e.g. are part of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) and partner of groups at EMBL, Stanford University and several European networks. Our modern lab space is located together with the Institute for Computational Cardiology and the Medical Faculty and Clinics of Heidelberg.
Personal qualifications:
You are a team-minded and creative person aiming to improve your research skills by doing molecular studies with a touch of bioinformatics and technology? Then you are right in our lab! Fluent English and/or German language is required.
